National Day | Not Only About Celebration

Even though learning another language and establishing a global perspective are the special parts from a bilingual school, learning about our own culture and nurturing the sense of belonging and proudness towards the concept of “nation” are particularly important. For this National Day, we not only celebrated with students, but also taught to know more about our country, to feel the beauty of Chinese language, and to gain more sense on the concept on their roles and responsibilities as a part of our nation.

To celebrate our National day, Chinese teachers introduced this festival to students and asked them to make poster, draw, and watch videos. By making posters, students not only gained more ideas of patriotism, but also presented their creativities.

Students also learned to sing the song “中国话.” They all agreed that the song is beautiful and these days the classroom was surrounded by their singings,they all said that they“would enjoy learning Chinese.”By learning about Mandarin and the songs, children fell in love with learning Chinese, started to pay more attention in learning the language and culture, and wished to spread out Chinese culture to the world.

This Friday, we educated children on patriotism, teachers and students celebrated this important day all together. This is not simply a holiday, it memorializes the establishment of our country, reminds us about our history, and is meaningful to today’s prosperity.

Our principals, teachers and students filmed a video of “我和我的祖国”to send our love towards our motherland.

Our sister school, VSA, even made a video from the other side, held our hands, and sent our best wishes to our motherland. The whole video is based on “故乡的云”and “东方之珠”and is made by middle schoolers from VSA.

Students from Year 5 practiced beating drums with the music “中国人” to celebrate our National day, and to collaborate with other schools under the Victoria Education in both Mainland and Hong Kong. They all followed the rhythm perfectly. Students were responsible, hard-working, and united.


It is worth noting that their drums were all hand-made from old buckets. Based on what Dr. Koong shared at the Opening Ceremony, we used plastic wraps to make the drumhead and drew on it, and used acrylic spray to draw on the bucket.

Nation, including the country and families. And school is a big family and the miniature of nation and society. This unit, students from year 1 learned about roles and responsibilities, and communities through inquiry. We started from the inquiry questions such as “What does a school have?” “What are the people at school? And what are their jobs?” Then they would investigate and interview other people.

They enjoyed interviewing the staffs at school, including the management group, the librarian, cleaners, bus drivers and so on, and asked them what their jobs and responsibilities are. Guiding by teachers, children gathered together to discuss, draw maps, present, and ask questions.

This process is a good example of IB system. Through this task, students practiced their research skills, thinking skills, communication skills, self-management skills, and social skills. After understanding the concept, students started to think about their roles and responsibilities at home, at school and in the nation.

Before the National Day, we asked children to make posters about our country, write down information about China, including traditions, foods, location, bordering countries and so on. Through working independently and class discussion, this task enhanced students’ understanding in our country, the proudness of being Chinese, and their responsibilities as a citizen.
